"On the third week of my illness, I thought that I was going to die." Ten years ago, during the SARS H1N1 pandemic, singer/songwriter/vocal coach Tota Mendez, thought that she was seeing the last few days of her life. Bedridden for 6 weeks, she cried as she breathed as if pieces of broken glass were piercing through her nose and throat. After being bedridden for 6 weeks, recovery was a dark, excruciating process as this singer lost her voice. It was a painful journey towards recovery but she had one victory: she conquered her battle with alcohol. Coughing her way through ten years, she strived to live an alcohol-free life and in recent years, has finally regained her voice. The nightingale started to sing again!
